I have been struggling for days to understand why I felt a connection to the protesters in Iran. Obviously, I'm not Iranian -- I'm about as American as they come. And as an American, I've always observed the distance between us and people in the Middle East. I'm not as up to speed on Iranian politics as I could be and, outside of minor social reforms that were ultimately under control of the unelected Supreme Leader and Assembly of Experts, I have not understood there to be a major difference between Ahmadinejad and Mousavi. We'd still be dealing with the same people, the same power structure that took innocent Americans hostage in the Iranian Revolution and cheered its people for dancing in the streets in celebration of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Most of all, I'm here and they are there, and virtually nothing I do or say could have any impact whatsoever on the situation.
